Before starting this topic, it is advised to read “How to Link Activities in Primavera Project Planner P6?”
In the previous article, we linked all activities using Finish to Start (FS) relationship. In this article, we will adjust the logical relationships to reflect the actual work flow. The actual work flow will be as follows;
The project will start by “Start of Project” milestone. Next will be “Preparation of Drawings”. After the drawings are completed, Approval from client and LDA (Land Development Authority) will be taken. There are two ways to tackle the approval activities; first by making them Milestone and second by making this an activity and enter some reasonable duration. We will proceed by second method. Next will be the Site Preparation (i.e. Clearance of Site); followed by the “Procurement of Bulk Material”. The procurement activity will be ongoing acitivty till project finish date. At this beginning stage, we are doing this but once you get professional with P6, it is advised to use milestones for material procurement. Next will be Excavation for Foundation followed by Concreting, DPC and Erection of walls. Then Shuttering will be done for Slab, followed by Electrification for Slab (i.e. Conduiting for wiring in slabs). After complete all the said activities, concrete will be poured. After curing for the required time, we will proceed to Plastering, Paint & Wood Works and ending the project by Project Completion activity. It is noteworthy that we will start and finish with milestones. The first activity (Start of Project) should be marked as “Start Mile Stone” & the last activity (Project Completion) will be marked as “Finish Mile Stone”. Activity Details can be used to change the activity types. The network will be as follows;
The above network shows the work flow. The digits mean the lags for the corresponding relationship. In the above image, a part of Activity Network is highlighted in red. This highlighted part needs more attention to understand. It can be observed that using FS relationship makes sure that Concrete will be poured after completion of shuttering, electrical works in slab and rebar fixing. One has to implement complete network in P6 but let us implement the red highlighted portion to help you understand;
Open the project and locate “Installation of Shuttering for Slab”. We have already assigned Rebar Fixing as it’s Successors as shown in figure below;
In the Activity Details (shown above), change Relation to SS and add Lag as 3; as shown in the image below;
Similarly the rest of the network can be created, too.
